Terrewode Maternity: One bold step closer to a world without fistula

After years of careful planning and partnership-building, we are thrilled to announce that we’re making steady progress toward a transformative expansion of Terrewode Women’s Community Hospital with Terrewode Maternity.
We have raised $1.5 million so far, plus a $1 million matching gift pledge. That puts us just $800,000 away from the funds needed to break ground on this state-of-the-art maternity ward focused on preventive care, safe delivery, and respectful treatment.
This is more than a building. It’s a commitment to protecting women during the most vulnerable moments of pregnancy and childbirth while preventing injuries and deaths that are entirely avoidable.
Women and families in Uganda urgently need access to safe, specialized care, and every delay means more mothers and babies remain without the services they need.
Public health facilities in Uganda are chronically underfunded, plagued by a lack of infrastructure, equipment, essential drugs, and basic supplies.
Severe staff shortages are common. Women often cannot access life-saving C-sections. When they can, poorly performed surgeries can lead to fistula. Or death.
This is not acceptable.
We’re launching this new phase of the capital campaign for Terrewode Maternity during the month of May to honor mothers everywhere who deserve the care they need to deliver their babies safely.
On May 23, International Day to End Obstetric Fistula will serve as a reminder that hundreds of thousands of women and girls still suffer from this devastating yet preventable childbirth injury. It doesn’t have to be this way.
