TERREWODE MATERNITY
ONE BOLD STEP CLOSER
to a world without fistula

There is a dire need for better maternal healthcare in Uganda.
Public health facilities in Uganda are chronically underfunded, plagued by a lack of infrastructure, equipment, essential drugs, and basic supplies.
Severe staff shortages are common, made worse by a widespread lack of adequate training and low levels of competence in critical emergency obstetric skills.
Women often cannot access life-saving C-sections. When they can, poorly performed surgeries can lead to fistula. Or death.

Uganda has one of the world's highest maternal mortality rates.

women and adolescent girls die every year from preventable causes during pregnancy and childbirth.

1,800+
women and girls have received comprehensive, holistic treatment and rehabilitation for fistula and other childbirth injuries since Terrewode Women’s Community Hospital first opened in Soroti in 2019.
It’s time to build on that progress.
It’s time to take a transformational step toward ending fistula by addressing the chronic absence of accessible, high-quality maternity services in Eastern Uganda.

It's time to build Terrewode Maternity.
Prevention is the key to ending fistula
Terrewode Maternity will save lives
and PREVENT fistula from happening by providing:
Comprehensive, high-quality prenatal and maternity care to 1,500 delivering mothers and their babies each year, with a focus on vulnerable women and girls.
Private labor and delivery suites, where each woman can remain in one, supportive space throughout her entire birthing juourney.
Specialized care for high-risk pregnancies and babies born prematurely or with low birth weight, including a neonatal intensive care unit.
Kangaroo Mother Care, involving prolonged skin-to-skin contact as soon as possible after birth — a low-cost, highly effective, and sustainable model of care that is rarely practiced in Ugandan hospitals.
Screenings to detect risks for obstructed labor sooner so that women receive the right care before complications cause preventable injuries or become life- threatening.
Expert training to frontline health workers, improving the quality of care at clinics and hospitals across the entire region and beyond.
Innovative, sustainable solutions that other facilities can replicate.
